History of Russian Church

A Babtism"We knew not whether we were in heaven or on earth, for surely there is no such splendour or beauty anywhere upon earth. We cannot describe it to you: only this we know, that God dwells there among men, and that their worship surpasses the worship of all other places. For we cannot forget that beauty". These words, quoted from the twelfth-century Tale of Bygone Years (commonly referred to in English as the Primary Chronicle), were relayed back to the pagan ruler of Kievan Rus, Prince Vladimir, around the year 988, by envoys sent to enquire as to the suitability of faiths for the emerging Russian state. The Russian envoys pointed to the central place that beauty occupied in worship, a beauty of holiness that laid the foundation of a thousand-year culture that arose from the adoption of Byzantine Orthodox Christianity by Vladimir, later canonized as a saint. Madonna and Child 3-paneled lacquer icon Madonna and Child 3-paneled lacquer icon

Prior to 1917, artists in the village of Mstera created some of Russia's most exquisite icons. When the Communists banned icon painting, artists developed their now-famous craft of lacquer box art. After the collapse of the USSR, Mstera artists returned to their roots, generating beautiful religious works. Our paneled icon combines the ancient traditions of iconography with the 18-karat gold borders and other techniques common to Russian lacquer art.

Black Madonna icon Black Madonna icon

The original Our Lady of Czestochowa, enshrined in a 14th-century Polish monastery, is believed to possess miraculous healing powers. For centuries, millions of believers have burned votive candles and incense in her honor. (She was dubbed The Black Madonna because of the resulting layers of soot residue.) This museum-quality modern reproduction, crafted in Krakow, Poland, transcends time and history with its reverent beauty. Accented with an ornate, highly detailed silver-plated riza. Available in standard (8½"x7") and large (12"x10½") sizes. Please specify above.

This stunning wooden egg, depicting the Madonna and Child, was handcrafted by a master artisan at Sergeyev Posad, Europe's largest monastery. Each is meticulously hand-painted, using special enamels and gold leaf. Hand-lacquered. Recreation of classic scene painted on religious icons for two millennia. Egg 5" tall on 3" stand.

Lichen Virgin icon Lichen Virgin icon

Every year, millions of pilgrims flock to the small Polish village of Lichen, to view the sacred 18th-century Virgin Icon. Our exacting replica, imported from Krakow, recalls the original with a gold-gilt riza, surrounded by an ornate, hand-finished, silver-plated copper frame. The riza has been encrusted with 30 Swarovski crystals. This piece is a rarity in iconography because the Christ child, normally found on religious icons, has been replaced with Poland's national symbol, the White Eagle. 11"x9½".

Also Available! Our Lady of Czestochowa or "Black Madonna" (#150254-S) is accented with an ornate, highly detailed silver-plated riza. Bless your home with a hand-finished, silver-plated Blessing Christ icon (#121218) featuring gold-gilt halo, sacred heart and border trim.
