Aleksey Petrovich Antropov was born in 1716 into the family of a soldier. His inclination for art was clear from the early days of his youth He studied painting under Andrey Matveev and Ivan Vishnyakov From the 1740's onwards, he participated in the decoration of many of the numerous palaces in St. Petersburg In 1752-1755, he was commissioned to paint The Kiev Cathedral of St. Andrew From 1761 he was the chief painter of the Synod But he was also famous for his portrait-painting. Among his best exhibits are the Portrait of the Lady-in-Waiting A. M. Izmaylova (1759), the Portrait of Emperor Peter III (1762) and the Portrait of Countess M. A. Rumyantzeva (1764). | |||||
