Customs officials at the Moscow Sheremetyevo international airport seized over 300 antiques and art pieces subject to smuggling attempts in 2001. According to Russian State Customs Committee, 40 criminal cases have been initiated on the seizures. The committee said that the geography of such smuggling had dramatically expanded. If earlier objects of cultural value were smuggled mostly to European countries, the United States, and Israel, of late, they have often been meant for Eastern, for example, Arab countries. Among smuggled items, icons and other religious objects, art and crafts, rare books, and coins are most often reported. The committee mentioned that the number of attempts to smuggle objects of cultural value from Russia had grown ten fold in recent years. In 2000, over 27,000 objects considered cultural and historical valuables subject to smuggling, were seized. A hardback book about Kievan Rus to Faberge by Anne Odom, William R. Hardcover: 288 pages Publisher: Merrell Publishers; Bilingual edition (October 2001) In Russia, where the celebration of the Resurrection is the most important event in the Orthodox calendar, the exchange of real, decorated eggs as gifts at Easter has for centuries been a central ritual of the festival. Exquisitely decorated porcelain Easter eggs were produced by the Imperial Porcelain Factory, St. Petersburg, and were used at the Russian court as Easter gifts, presented by members of the Imperial family to courtiers. Russian Imperial Porcelain Easter Eggs presents the most extensive survey of these delicate and now rare objects ever published. Over two hundred of the world's remaining Russian porcelain Easter eggs have been specially photographed and reproduced life-size. This lavishly illustrated and beautifully produced book will become an essential reference source not only for collectors of porcelain but also for anyone interested in the decorative arts or the exciting history of one of the world's most important and fascinating countries. A wonderful book showing the wide range of timepieces that the Russians produce, and which are now becoming available on the open market. Profusely illustrated and well documented. Includes a short, but very complete, table of cyrillic to english for the various markings one comes across.

The colour, the vigour and the originality of traditional Russian gold, silver and jewellery distinguish it clearly from the work of other European nations, the bold decoration and unique forms developed by the Russian craftsmen epitomising the distinction in culture. It was in Kievan Rus, the great Slavic state founded at the end of the 10th century, that this originality first became evident, an originality now on fascinating display in Russia's principal museums
